Isaac

It was a relief to be back on the road again and heading toward their destination.

Isaac was content to place one foot in front of the other. It was a soothing motion and one that allowed his mind to go blank instead of focusing on all those places he didn’t want it to go. Cass and Daisy were at his side, crunching through the melting ice and snow. There were countless obstacles that awaited them, mostly other humans, though he was sure the storm wasn’t done with them yet. Not if the mushroom-gray clouds moving in were any sign.

With the snow leaving and the drizzle soaking everything, people had chanced the elements over sitting in their cars. He wasn’t sure which was the better option. Not when he still couldn’t put his finger on what was going on. Waiting for help was usually the preferred option, but it had been a week. People couldn’t sit in their cars on the highway without food and water for any longer. He didn’t want to imagine the lives already lost.

Still, eyeing the threatening skies, he wondered how many more people would lose their lives when the next round of weather hit. The drizzle wasn’t terrible, thanks to his leather jacket that kept the rain from soaking him to the bone. People weren’t prepared to be out in weather like this. Most had been caught off guard by the power snapping off and everything grinding to a violent stop. As evidenced by the bodies and the blood staining the remains of the snow.

For a week, the corpses from that first afternoon had laid frozen from the weather as others had passed by, either unwilling or unable to move them. That one afternoon had caused more destruction than he could ever have expected. Deaths that would never be fully accounted for, with no one to claim their bodies or return them to those wondering what had happened to their loved ones. One glance at Cass, and he saw the way she averted her eyes from the signs of death haunting the roadway.

His eyes landed on three young males. Each donned a puffy jacket; yellow, black, and green. It was the guns in their hands and the holes in their chests and foreheads that told him that not all the mortalities were from the freezing temperatures or accidents on the highways. Some were simply the result of humans and their everlasting greed. Even in times like these, people wouldn’t hesitate to blow each other away. He wondered what the fight had been over—a pack of camels, the last of the chips, or something else. It didn’t matter. He didn’t want to know. Crouching next to the bodies, he reached for the guns.

“What are you doing?” Cass demanded in a hiss.

“We might need them,” he said without looking at her.

Her face was grim, but she nodded in understanding as he placed the weapons into his pack. He wanted to offer her comfort, but he didn’t know the right words to give her.
